You’ll Never Guess What Scares Teachers Most About AI (besides cheating).

According to this Forbes article, it isn’t just academic integrity that is worrying teachers about AI.

Teachers are also scared that AI will start replacing human interaction.  Chatbots and other technologies are already starting to promise big things for things like tutoring and independent student remediation and some are even promising to help students develop social emotional learning skills.

That’s right.  If kids are struggling to fit in socially there may come a day soon when we can just sit them down with a machine who will help them build their self esteem.

62% of teachers report that reduction in human interaction is one of their biggest fears with the AI revolution.  It’s worth asking what it is about human interaction that is so important.  If we can help students feel better, why wouldn’t we let a machine help?

Neuroscience may have an opinion on this one.  Brain waves actually sync with one another during human interaction in a process called “neural coupling.”  This coupling creates biological processes that generate feelings of safety and trust.  Think about how much better you feel after having a great conversation where you got to talk and listen to other people’s experiences.

This isn’t a miracle.  Positive human interactions are biologically based.  It isn’t clear yet whether machines can or will have the same effect on us.  In the meantime, teachers appear to have an intuitive opinion on the matter.  They are worried and who can blame them.

Count Teach Different in on “Team Human.”  It’s dialogue and human interaction that we need to improve on, not replace, with AI.

That’s why we created a conversation technique that makes unforgettable conversations routine.  You can hear it every week on the Teach Different Podcast.
