Teaching Success and Hardship Using “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss

After the last tree falls and the factories shut down in The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, the Lorax has to leave the once fruitful forest. For this lesson, I would use the Sophocles’ conversation on hardship. In small groups, I would have them decide whether or not the Lorax was successful as a result of his hardship of watching the forest disappear. Students would come to a consensus in their small group and share with class. I would then have students complete a reflective exit ticket on whether the work of the Lorax to save the forest was worth it.
