Great Women of the American Revolution – Responsibility

When teaching about the American Revolution, I like reading Brianna Hall’s informational text Great Women of the American Revolution which profiles many different women who made an impact during this time. One part that always stands out to students is the story of Elizabeth Burgin who helped 200 American soldiers escape imprisonment. I would introduce this text by creating a discussion using the Toni Morrison conversation about responsibility. As we read about the various accomplishments of women during the American Revolution, I would ask students to consider how these women used their freedom to free others.
