One of my favorite texts to teach the theme of forgiveness is The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo. In this story, the main character provides a great example of the importance of forgiveness and how holding onto anger and seeking revenge can hurt you just as much as your so-called enemies. I would bring in the Benjamin Franklin conversation about forgiveness near the end or even after reading the novel, which would lead students toward answering the essential question, “Should your forgive those who have wronged you?”
