The “Federalist Paper 51” is a great entry point for analyzing the theme of power and how our government is set up to put a check on it. Throughout the study of this text and theme I would hearken back to the John Adams conversation, to allow students to appreciate how worried the founding fathers were about one person or group having too much power in their new government; they had just had a king. Essential questions are always there: what could go wrong if someone has too much power, and how do you know when it’s happened?
