The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles is a captivating telling of courage of a young girl who was escorted to school by federal marshals to stake her claim to a free education. Ruby Bridges was that girl and she, along with the African American community, suffered great hardship in the segregated south after the Civil War. I would use the Sophocles conversation on hardship after reading the book and challenge students with the essential question “Do you have to suffer to be successful?”
