Before reading The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams, I could use the conversation on sacrifice by Mahatma Gandhi, which explores the idea that serving others is the best way to discover our true purpose. I could then focus on the theme of sacrifice by looking at the way the toys only become “Real” when they are loved and cherished by the boy. As they become worn, faded, or torn, toys achieve their true purpose, giving themselves fully to the boy and being loved.
