The Iliad – Anger

Studying epic poetry, particularly Homer’s The Iliad, is a great way to explore the theme of anger, as this theme is present from the very beginning of the poem which begins with the line, “Sing, Goddess, sing of the rage of Achilles,” and remains ever present until the last book when Achilles drags Hector’s dead body around the walls of Troy. Throughout the unit questions can be posed about Achilles’ anger, which tie to Lao Tzu’s quote, “The best fighter is never angry.” How does anger affect outcomes; in ourselves, in our world and in others?
