Great Gatsby – Self-Motivation

In teaching a unit on The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, I want to focus on the theme of self-motivation, as so many of the novel’s characters are motivated by different things, some harder to figure out than others; just like in life. I would hold the Cheyenne Proverb, “Our first teacher is our own heart,” in continuous conversation as a way to track Jay Gatsby’s and other characters’ decisions. Students will be given an opportunity to appreciate how complicated the dynamics between motivation, decision making and outcomes can be.
