“The Danger of a Single Story” is an essay by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie delivered at a TED Talk. The speech works well on its own, or as an introduction to a unit dealing with themes of tolerance, understanding, and humility. I would have students watch the TED Talk speech, then present the conversation from Socrates about humility. We would discuss the importance of realizing that, despite what we might have heard or read, we don’t know everything because we can’t walk in everyone’s shoes. To be open minded and humble when learning is the surest way to become a compassionate citizen.
