In the Ted Talk “The power of believing that you can improve,” psychologist and Stanford professor, Carol Dweck, delivers her findings about growth and fixed mindsets, which can help viewers uncover the tools within themselves to achieve their dreams. I would have students follow up the Ted Talk with an open-ended discussion using the Henry David Thoreau conversation, ultimately asking students to identify why Dweck would likely agree with Thoreau’s quote. It would be an empowering discussion for students, in which they realize that the ability to success is already present within each and every one of them–they merely need to activate the proper mindset.
