Space Race – Ambition

The Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union in the 1950s and 1960s contains great conversations about the theme of ambition, and how the United States, and especially President John F. Kennedy, felt pressure to catch up to the Soviet Union and eventually surpass them in space exploration. I would use Dr. Seuss’s quote “Oh the things you can find if you don’t stay behind,” at the beginning of the lesson to set up how strong a push the fear of being left behind can be. It can take you to the moon.
