I am teaching a geography unit about settlement patterns in the United States. In the unit, questions will include “Why is it important to settle near bodies of water?” and “How does climate affect settlement?” I would pair Erik Erikson’s thoughts on interdependence with this unit, asking students to think about Erikson’s words a little differently. Settlers in a group definitely rely on each other, but they also rely on the earth and the natural resources around them. I would ask students to rephrase the Erikson quote to express a settlement’s reliance on their environments.
