Ruby Bridge – Respect

Within a unit on Segregation it would be a good idea to look at the story of Ruby Bridges to discuss the theme of respect, as she was one of the first African American children to attend an all-white elementary school in the South. I would look at the Ralph Waldo Emerson conversation about respect in the beginning of the lesson. His quote, “The secret to education lies in respecting the student,” can be used to allow students to explore the hardships Bridges faced in not being respected by all of her teachers and fellow students, and how important it was for her education that some teachers did respect her.
