In the midst of the modern civil rights movement, Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson is more relevant now than ever before. Diving into the injustices embedded in today’s institutions, Stevenson intertwines stories of unjust treatment and punishment of those who were wrongly convicted or received an unfair trial. Through his writing, he challenges biases and calls for active resistance of unjust systems. After being introduced to Stevenson and his mission, I would use the Margaret Mead conversation regarding civic responsibility to engage students in a conversation around one’s role and responsibility when it comes to fighting for change.
