Within a larger unit exploring World War II, students would benefit from learning about Japanese Internment and looking at the theme of conflict. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. conversation can be used to frame how some Americans viewed Japanese Americans as the enemy during WW2, and students will be able to explore how difficult it is for societies to view people with love in times of conflict. This discussion could highlight the real life consequences when love is overpowered by the fear that someone is an “enemy.”
