In Sherman Alexie’s short story collection, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist fight in Heaven, “Imagining the Reservation” describes how dreams can feed, heal, and transform Native Americans’ lives. Alexie juxtaposes imagination with the reality of reservation life, stating that “Survival = Anger x Imagination. Imagination is the only weapon on the reservation” (Alexie 150). Using the Einstein conversation on imagination, students will consider whether imagination can supersede circumstances and spark metamorphosis or whether it leads to disillusionment and unrealistic expectations. Students will write an imitation of the story’s language and structure, re-imagining the facts of their own lives.
