“Fly High, Bessie Coleman” – Perseverance

The informational text, Fly High, Bessie Coleman by Jane Sutcliffe in an excellent account of the first African American female. I would hook readers into the topic of perseverance by using the Henry David Thoreau conversation to discuss success and failure. Students will have the chance to share their personal experiences and beliefs about success and failure before we read the text. As we read the text, we will note how Bessie is able to achieve incredible success and obtain her pilot’s license, despite challenges and discrimination. This lesson lends itself well to the essential question, “What makes a successful person?”
