Salem Witchcraft Trials – Loyalty

When teaching a history lesson about The Salem Witch Trials, I would ask students to consider these events from the perspective of the accused. Many accused persons were upstanding members of the community, yet often their friends in town refused to speak up. In this lesson, I would ask students think creatively and write a short account from the point of view of an accused person. Before students embark on this writing activity, I would hold a discussion using the Martin Luther King Jr. conversation about loyalty, in which we would consider which is more hurtful–the words of enemies or the silence of friends.
