Immigration – Self-Motivation

In my social studies curriculum, we examine how the culture of a population changes over time due to outside influences. The best example of this is The United States, often described as a “melting pot.” I first pose the following essential question in this unit, “How has immigration affected the culture of the United States?” Then we would discuss the value of cultural diversity and how diversity is only possible because of one’s desire to maintain his or her deep rooted beliefs and traditions. I would use the conversation surrounding the Cheyenne proverb about self-motivation to guide students in considering the motivation it takes to remain true to one’s culture.
