When teaching students about the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the impact these explorers had on the future of Westward Expansion, I see a great opportunity to frame the expedition as a story of hard work and perseverance. Though they were faced with Native American conflicts, hunger, disease, the explorers carried on bravely to gather information about the west. I would pair my Lewis and Clark lessons with the conversation inspired by Winston Churchill about perseverance. As we view maps and read excerpts about Lewis and Clark’s journey, we will pinpoint the myriad of successes and failures and how the courage to keep moving forward was evident throughout.
