Norma Jean, Jumping Bean – Obedience

In Norma Jean, Jumping Bean the main character is a young kangaroo who must learn to follow rules. When she gets in trouble for jumping, she resolves to never jump again. By the end of the story, she has the courage to compete in a jumping contest and wins, illustrating that there is an appropriate time and place to do her jumping. Before reading this short story, I would use the conversation inspired by Albert Einstein, which encourages students to challenge the status quo and question authority.  Why do we have rules? Students will recognize the need for some rules, but that individuals should have courage to challenge the norms, specifically when conscience plays a role.
