Our session: The Teach Different Method for Education Students
- 43 educators
- Presented by Dan, Steve, Allison
• The trainers introduced the Teach Different Method using the quote "It's better to be alone than in bad company," and teachers practiced creating claims, counterclaims, and sharing personal stories.
• Teachers actively engaged with the quote, offering interpretations like preferring solitude over toxic relationships and the importance of surrounding yourself with positive energy to protect mental health.
• Counterclaim discussion challenged the quote, with teachers arguing that isolation isn't healthy, educators should reach struggling students, and "bad company" may just be stereotypes worth questioning.
• Teachers asked deep questions including "What is bad?" and "How do we know when being alone is what we should do?" while sharing vulnerable personal experiences.
• Allison shared successful adaptations for English language learners including allowing Spanish responses, requiring written work first, weekly implementation with curriculum integration, and modeling vulnerability through personal stories.
When I was in elementary school, towards the fifth and sixth grade … being the loner, helped me in a healthy sort of just sort of get my bearings and just relax and clear my mind.
Sometimes, when you're an educator, you want to be able to reach out to everyone … why are you being selfish and alone when you can surround yourselves with all kinds of people, whether they're good or bad, if what you want is to help everybody?
If you surround yourself with bad company, you could be a positive influence to them, and even become a role model that they can look up to.
Many students, at the end of the year, when I had them fill out a form, what they enjoyed the most, they said that this was their favorite part of the class.
