“A disciplined mind leads to happiness and an undisciplined mind leads to suffering.”
Dalai LamaBig Idea
Teachers and parents alike espouse the value of focus. With focus, children appreciate the value of the moment and can learn to control their mind. Yet, phones and social media conspire to make focus very difficult. The undisciplined mind, stripped from its foundation, shifts and drifts in different directions and tasks are left undone, leaving students left feeling inadequate and powerless.
Claim
According to the Dalai Lama, happiness is a result of learning how to focus and control the mind.
Counterclaim
Happiness is an external reward, not something we control.
