Maya Angelou – Success
“You can only become truly accomplished at something you love.”
Maya AngelouBig Idea
Success, students are told, comes from doing well in school, building friendships and finding the right career. The only problem is they aren’t told exactly how to find this success and whether actually loving what they do should even be a consideration. As a result, it’s important for students to develop a self-awareness around what success means to them and how they plan to get it.
Claim
According to poet and civil rights Maya Angelou, success and love go hand in hand. If you love something, you will be successful doing it. Therefore, you should only pursue things in life that you love because you are guaranteed to be successful as a result.
Counterclaim
You can be accomplished at something even though you don’t love doing it. Success doesn’t always come from doing what you love. Sometimes it comes from doing what you are obligated to do.
