The Great Gatsby – Dreams

In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, The Great Gatsby, Gatsby puts himself in ruthless pursuit of wealth and love without regard to the cost. Although his ambition eventually leads to his own murder, it begs the reader to wonder about the ripple effect of the quintessential American Dream. After having the Harriet Tubman conversation, I would ask students to give their perspective on what the American dream means to them prior to reading the book and have them seek parallels and contrasts between their perspective and Gatsby’s.
