I want to teach the Gettysburg Address and I think the Gandhi conversation on sacrifice would be a great conversation to have just before handing out this speech to get the kids appreciating the importance of thinking of others before yourself. Students could read the speech and discuss the role that sacrifice played for the soldiers during the war. As an exit slip they could answer the essential question “Is sacrificing for others always the right thing to do?” I could start the following day’s activities by reading a few responses.
