Argumentative Writing – Obedience

I am teaching argumentative writing and I want to focus on the theme of obedience by exploring the pros and cons of following rules even when you disagree with them. Using the Albert Einstein quote, “Never do anything against conscience, even if the state demands it,” as a starting point, students can write an argument agreeing with the quote or disagreeing. In order to explore the complexity of the question more thoroughly I would have students write another argument which takes the opposite position.
