“Kindness is in our power, even when fondness is not.” Samuel Johnson
SEL Connection: Just about everybody will tell you that kindness is a virtue. There are some people who are kind all the time. They’re the ones we put our trust in without even realizing it. We know that it isn’t in their heart to hurt or reject us and we crave their attention. We gravitate to them silently and we usually don’t ever get the chance to thank them about who they are.
(1) Claim: Here English poet and playwright Samuel Johnson reminds us why kindness is so hard to have sometimes. The kindest people choose to be kind, even if they’re not fond of the person to whom they’re being kind.
(2) Counterclaim: But what about when someone is inconsiderate or downright mean? We can try to be kind to them but some people will view our kindness as a weakness and start to take advantage of us.
(3) Essential Question: Does everyone deserve kindness?
