“Throw me to the wolves and I will return leading the pack.” Seneca
SEL Connection: Perseverance is a rare trait, but it’s one every student needs to have to be successful. And that’s because life is rarely easy and growing up is full of challenges. You have to be resourceful and draw on your inner strengths to overcome obstacles. How we get over these obstacles reveals our true potential.
(1) Claim: Here Roman philosopher Seneca dares anyone to test his resolve. Not only will the attack fail, but the attempt to hurt him will make him stronger and he will be greater than he was before.
(2) Counterclaim: But persevering takes time and energy. Sometimes situations can overwhelm us and no matter how strong we are and how much we want to try, it’s easier to just get along. We should pick battles, not embrace them.
(3) Essential Question: Try putting this question on the board to get a conversation going about perseverance – Does it take strength to avoid conflict?
