“Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud.” Maya Angelou
SEL Connection: Happiness is a fleeting thing sometimes, no matter what your age. Students are at all levels of development and experience happiness, or the lack of it, to the extreme.
(1) Claim: Here Maya Angelou asks us to seek out people who are hurting and try to give them hope…something to look forward to. The idea here is to empathize with others and work toward making somebody else’s life better.
(2) Counterclaim: Yet there are always those “debbie downers,” those individuals who don’t seem to care much about being happy and are always trying to bring other people down. There is a destructive force in people too and maybe it’s better to let people live in clouds if that’s what they prefer.
(3) Essential Question: Can we make other people happy? Here is a question that strikes at the hear of what happiness really is and whether we have control over whether other people can achieve it.
