Courage is grace under pressure. Ernest Hemingway
Counterclaim: But maybe what we view as ‘grace’ really is disguised fear. Certain people are able to conceal their fears to a point where they seem to act in calm, measured ways. Viewed in this way, then, everybody experiences fear; it is just that certain people hide it better.
Essential Question: Are courageous people really just good at hiding their fears?
This question would be interesting to pose just before you learn about somebody who became famous for doing a courageous act. You can get the students to think about the fears the person must have had going into the situation and then draw upon the students’ understanding of their own fears in the situations that they face. This conversation would become very personal and explore the inner motivations of why we act they way we do.
