Wisdom comes alone through suffering. Asechylus
Counterclaim: But anger and bitterness come through suffering too, especially when you feel wronged by somebody else. These emotions make you much less susceptible to thinking and more susceptible to feelings of revenge. Not only that but wisdom comes from joy too. Achieving that promotion, graduating with honors, making that great friend– these are all life experiences that give you great wisdom about yourself and your potential.
We’ve stumbled on a great opportunity to engage students into a conversation on the ethics of wisdom and suffering.
Essential Question: Should suffering lead to wisdom or despair?
Let them sort this out by reflecting on their own life experiences when they had the choice to either learn or give up.
